Ionblox Earns UN 38.3 Certification for its High-Performance Cells with Silicon-Dominant Anodes

Certification enables safe and reliable distribution of Ionblox batteries

FREMONT, Calif., August 16, 2023 – Ionblox, a next-generation lithium-ion battery company, today announced it has received the UN 38.3 certification for its cells with pre-lithiated silicon dominant anodes. The achievement will allow Ionblox to move forward in distributing its cells, which can uniquely provide high energy, high power, and 1,000 fast charge cycles. 

Established by the United Nations, the certification ensures standards for the safe transport of lithium and lithium-ion battery products. The UN 38.3 certification is an essential marker of the quality and safety of lithium and lithium-ion battery products, requiring tests that include overcharge, short circuit, heat, vibration, impact, and altitude simulations. The certification is recognized worldwide, helping to facilitate international shipping and enhance consumer trust. “This certification ensures our promise to deliver not just powerful, but also safe and reliable battery technology to our customers," said Herman Lopez, chief technology office of Ionblox. "This recognition is a critical component in beginning the production and distribution of the advanced battery technology we’re building at Ionblox.” 

Ionblox’s pre-lithiated silicon anode and cutting edge cell design enables a combination of up to 50% higher energy density, 5X more power, and an extreme fast charge of 10 minutes compared with conventional lithium-ion cells. Ionblox is currently producing its large format pouch cells of up to 50Ah on its pilot production lines.
