Gelion and Ionblox Announce JDA Towards Global Electrification

Joint Development Agreement to Develop Lithium-Silicon-Sulfur Battery

NSW, Australia, 21 November 2023: As the world moves toward electrification, access to high performance batteries that are safe, scalable, and low cost is critical. Only batteries that can achieve all three can electrify everything.

Lithium-silicon-sulfur batteries have the potential achieve this, leveraging Australian and US supply chains to manufacture a battery that doesn’t rely on nickel, cobalt, or even graphite.

Ionblox and Gelion have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with the objective of delivering this battery,

with the potential to be up to 25-50% lighter than current batteries and cost 35% less on a materials basis. It is also expected to be to be safer, meaning the risk of fires and thermal events are drastically reduced.

Ionblox is a US-based lithium-silicon battery innovator with global investors and presence. To date, Ionblox have developed and launched high energy density and extremely fast charging silicon anode batteries that are being produced in large format pouch cells today and service next-generation applications in electric flight and electric vehicles.

After acquiring IP/technology from OXIS Energy and recently UK lithium-sulfur company, OXLiD, Gelion is now establishing a global presence in sulfur battery technology with this JDA.

The Joint Development Agreement will leverage the combined technology, expertise, patent portfolio protection, and leading R&D facilities we share collectively across Australia, US, and UK to develop a game changing technology.

“The future of energy storage will be led by performance, safety, and scalability. We believe lithium silicon sulfur will be the battery of the future.”

John Wood, CEO of Gelion Technologies

“Ionblox believes in the potential of sulfur, this program with Gelion will utilize our industry- leading silicon oxide anode to develop a lithium silicon sulfur battery.”

Sujeet Kumar, CEO of Ionblox
